Rainhill Kase Ha Shotokan Karate Academy

About the Club

My name is Yvonne Doyle and I have practiced karate for over 40 years. I hold the grade of 6th Dan awarded by the Kase Ha Shotokan Ryu Karate Do Academy. I am a member of the Shotokan Ryu Kase Ha International Instructors Academy and the English Shotokan Academy Technical Committee. You can read more about me in my profile page.

As part of my karate training I attend many courses in the UK and in Europe and sometimes take my Granddaughter. Whilst watching the classes with my husband she would ask why she could not join in. On other occasions she would ask simply why she could not come too. Over time she became most insistent that she wanted to learn karate.

Whilst it has never been an ambition to start a karate club, and acknowledging that there are any number of clubs she could join, it became apparent to me that, as it is the teachers methodology and personal preferences, that forms the basis for the manner in which all of the instruction will be given, if she wanted to be taught, it was my responsibility to teach her and if I was to teach her I would teach others who wished to be taught. Accordingly Rainhill Kase Ha Shotokan Karate Academy was born.

"To learn is a privilege, to pass on what you have learnt is your responsibility".

We practice traditional karate in the form of Kase Ha Shotokan Karate, following the teaching of Sensei Kase, accordingly, whilst the club is new, the dojo is very "old-world" and "old-school."

The Club is not run as a business to make money, but as a place of learning with the sole purpose of promoting and teaching Kase Ha Shotokan Karate in the local area, striving to make it as accessible as possible and with minimal cost to students.

"Teaching others is a task best left to those most qualified to do so".

Traditional karate is suitable for all ages and abilities and can be practiced by young and old, men and women, girls and boys alike; children are able to train from 6 years onwards.

Traditional karate does not require you to be the fittest, the strongest, or the most flexible.  Traditional karate is a way of life, training for the mind to develop a deeper understanding of self, this is more important  than training for physical performance, it is not a sport. Martial Arts is a personal thing and irrespective of their natural level of ability, students can always feel proud of their achievements.

Our training improves focus, awareness, observation, patience, and mental processing. It is our goal to create in every student an indomitable spirit to overcome all obstacles and achieve our absolute best.

Although we emphasise a balanced approach to training your mind and spirit, there is no lack of focus on improving our physical stamina, strength, balance, and agility. It will help you to be safe, to endure, to succeed, and to grow.

"It is not what you know that makes you smart, it is what you teach. It is not what you teach, but how you teach it, that is important. It is not what you learn that makes you wise, it is what you remember".

For parents who want their children to develop the skills necessary to stay safe and succeed in life, we provide safe, secure age-appropriate, non judgemental karate training while focusing on the development of attributes that are disciplined and foster success throughout one’s life through commitment and determination.

Children will meet new friends, will learn new skills which will develop their coordination, balance and concentration. They will be encouraged to learn Japanese phrases and to actively participate in counting in Japanese for the class. Children will develop a positive attitude towards health and fitness, respect for others, creativity and cooperation, self esteem and self confidence, perseverance and patience, self discipline and control.

Children will feel a sense of achievement, not just by progression through the grading system, but also by mastering new skills, techniques and concepts. Finally, whilst my teaching philosophy is to develop the students knowledge of traditional karate, they will be encouraged to compete in sport karate competitions and if along the way they win the odd competition, that will be a bonus.

We are an affiliated Children’s University Learning Destination and are validated to credit the learning that takes place with us.

Parents are able and positively encouraged to watch their child in a transparent teaching environment.

"Imagine if every child learned the respect, courtesy and discipline karate teaches.".

Kase-Ha Shotokan Karate emphasises the use of open handed techniques and concentrates on the power of breath that comes from the lower part of the abdomen, there are four main breathing principles used to develop the control of energy. If you're looking to improve your health and fitness, karate provides all the necessary ingredients for a long and healthy life.

Health and fitness should be treated as long term goals and by training under an experienced instructor you have the equivalent of a personal trainer - not only monitoring your ability and setting new goals and targets, but keeping the training exciting, interesting, challenging and fun.

Students are encouraged to train regularly and grade. Once a student reaches a specific level of development, they may try for promotion by taking part in a structured grading. A simplified grading system is used to encourage younger children to progress. Students who train regularly and grade may ultimately achieve black belt grade (after all, a black belt is just a white belt that never gave up). As skills progress, there are opportunities to attend training weekends such as the summer & winter Gasshuku's and training trips in England, Scotland, Republic of Ireland, France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Holland, Finland and Greece.

You only have one life - live it now - make a start by coming along to one of our training sessions (if only to have a look), and start enjoying the benefits of improved health, strength, stamina, flexibility, balance, co-ordination, concentration, self confidence and more.

It's great fun and we look forward to seeing you in the dojo soon.
